AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

On May 1st, Lisa Akselrad volunteered to help the Red Cross at the blood drive in Los Altos. The shelter-in-place orders brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted a shortage in blood donations. The local blood drive would fill that critical need.

According to Camilla Columna of the American Red Cross, there were 48 appointments scheduled that day. A total of 39 donors were processed through health histories. This resulted in a total of 38 productive units (27 Whole Blood, 11 Power Red), on a goal of 35.

MASKS FOR VALLEY MEDICAL
by Glen Wong

Photos of my wife, Yen La, and fellow TheatreWorks costume staff members making masks for local health care workers. These were made at their costume shop located at Redwood Shores within the last several weeks. Although all performances have been cancelled for the rest of this season, these staff members have volunteered their time to produce hundreds of masks for Valley Med staff in San Jose. For those wanting to make masks at home, Yen can provide a copy of their pattern.

STORY #2
by Lisa Akselrad

My sister, Audrey Akselrad Smith, suggested early on via email to her friends and loved ones to purchase N95 masks and regular masks.  Cindy and I did so.  We were glad to then donate the N95 masks to Valley Medical Center in San Jose where Audrey's daughter, Caitlin, works as a speech pathologist.

Lastly, around Thanksgiving time, Cindy and I give our mail carrier a Starbucks gift card to thank her for her outstanding service day in and day out no matter the weather. This year, Cindy and I decided not to wait to give a gift, so I gave the mail carrier two rolls of toilet paper and two rolls of paper towels. I figure I can at least spare those necessary products and share with someone who works long hours to help us during this pandemic. And, yes, around the official Thanksgiving, we will give the mail carrier a Starbucks gift card too!

"Growing up in post-war Japan we were poor. We didn't have much to eat.
And yet, we dreamed that one day we would become policemen or doctors. My hope is that Rotarians can provide a world in which children have dreams."
